CS 481: About the Final

Here is the breakdown of the 35 grades in the final test:

Overall, the median was 65.5, the low grade was 21, and the high grade was 106.5 (from an undergraduate -- once more the top 4 grades were achieved by undergraduates). For graduate students (8 tests), the median was 71, the high grade 77, the low grade 38.5; for undergraduate students (27 tests), the median was 54, the high grade 106.5, the low grade 21.

There was a marked amount of fatigue; this test was not longer than Test #2 (especially not given the 2 hours), yet many did not work all 6 problems. There was also a fair amount of misdirected energy, such as trying to derive formulas for various quantities in Problem #1 or discussing at length how a file system works in Problem #5. The grade was obtained by normalizing the score on a basis of 100 and adding 20% (as in the previous two tests); the net effect is simply to double the number of points you accumulated on a basis of 60.
