Albuquerque Vipassana Sangha

Previous Sangha Retreats

This page is meant to be used as an historical archive.

Here we list previous retreats sponsored by the Albuquerque Vipassana Sangha starting in August 2000. Much of the information on this page (especially for retreats 2004 and later) was cut and pasted from the Residential Retreats or Day Retreats page after the retreat was over, and things may be worded as if the retreat is current or about to happen. So, please change everything, in your mind, to past tense as you read! If you have dates and any other details for retreats the Albuquerque sangha sponsored before August 2000, please contact Wynette Richards at 255-5226.

Lila Kate Wheeler, November 20, 2004
Event: Day-long retreat. The theme for the retreat will be "The Buddha of This Moment." We are never separate from what is true. This spiritual axiom is not just an idea but a way of living. We have the power to connect with our experience anytime, no matter who we are or how life happens to be showing up in any moment. The more we can rest in experience exactly as it is, the more we begin to relax our futile struggles and instead appreciate the mysterious unfolding of our mind and body within the present moment. This is the Way of great peace, bliss and ease, and the gateway to compassion for ourselves and others. We will come together to practice this way of being, supported by the formal practices of Buddhist meditation. The retreat will be conducted in silence in order to deepen awareness and reduce distraction. Meditation instructions, question and answer periods, and individual interviews will be offered. Bring your ordinary self, a bag lunch and discover just how little needs to be done to reach (im)perfection!
Teacher: Lila Kate Wheeler. Lila learned Vipassana meditation from Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein in 1977 and has been leading shorter retreats around the United States for nearly 20 years. She has practiced with Western and Asian teachers from a variety of traditions in the US, Burma, India, Thailand and Europe. She's also a writer of fiction and journalism. Her most recent publication is Nixon Under the Bodhi Tree and Other Works of Buddhist Fiction, an anthology of other writers' stories published in spring 2004 by Wisdom Publications.

DaeJa Napier, January 22, 2005
Event: One-day of practice with DaeJa Napier. Open to students at all levels. Mindfulness and metta both open the heart to a more authentic heart-felt connection with ourselves and others. These practices promote a fearless presence of mind that allows us to live with increasing balance and clarity. The schedule will include an opening dhamma talk, instructions, and sitting and walking meditation. The closing circle will offer an opportunity to discuss the creative potential that mindfulness and metta bring to our daily lives. DaeJa Napier is the founding and guiding teacher of the Brahma Vihara Foundation. She has studied and practiced in various Buddhist traditions for nearly thirty years and been teaching for sixteen years. Her root teacher is Zen Master Seung Sahn. Although her practice and teaching have been influenced by many teachers, she has been most profoundly inspired by her contact with Punjaji of Lucknow and Joseph Goldstein of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA. Recently she has been in intensive practice at The Forest Refuge in Barre, MA, under the guidance of Joseph Goldstein and Sayadaw U Janaka. DaeJa responds to dharma students with intuitive precision and insight mirroring nuances of the awakening process that unfold naturally when practicing vipassana (insight meditation) and the brahmaviharas. Her conveyance of the Buddhist teachings reflect many qualities cultivated as a result of maintaining a formal practice over thirty-six years of mothering five children.

Eric Kolvig and DaeJa Napier, February 2, 2008
Event: THE FIVE PRECEPTS: A Contemplative Retreat. Any valid spiritual path, the Buddha said, must be founded on non-harming. These five guiding principles create an ethical foundation upon which to build an intentional life that protects ourselves and others from unnecessary suffering.
