Albuquerque Vipassana Sangha

Thursday Night Meetings

The Albuquerque sangha meets every Thursday evening, unless noted otherwise below. Everyone is welcome.
When:
6:30-7:10: Sitting with meditation instruction if desired. Please come a few minutes early to get settled before the bell rings at 6:30.
7:10-7:15: Short stretch break
7:15-8:10: Dharma talk or discussion or other activity. For details, see What We'll Do After the Sit below.
8:10-??: Sangha announcements, mingling, put away chairs.
Also see Dinner below.
Where: The monks at the Wat Buddhasothorn Temple generously allow us to use their meditation hall on Thursday nights. See Directions to Wat Buddhasothorn Temple.
Sitting: If you are new, these Sitting Instructions may be helpful. Someone will probably offer to give instructions during the sitting. Please feel free to ask for instructions, even if you aren't so new.
Bring: (1) If you like to sit on the floor, please bring a meditation cushion. The room is carpeted. There are plenty of chairs.
(2) If we have a visiting teacher, please consider offering dana to the teacher. (See Dana section below).
(3) We also ask for a small optional donation to the sangha so that we may make a donation from the sangha to the Wat and to help cover other sangha expenses. There'll be baskets for sangha and teacher dana on the table at the back of the room.
Dana: Dana (pronounced "dah-na") is a Pali word meaning generosity. Dating back to the time of the Buddha, there has existed an interdependence between those who offer the teachings and those who receive them. According to this tradition, our visiting teachers do not charge for coming to meet with us. The teachings are given freely. Voluntary contributions for the teachers' support are always gratefully accepted. If we have a guest teacher, you'll find a basket for teacher dana on the table at the back of the room. If you need for your dana contributions to be tax deductible, you can write a check payable to Albuquerque Vipassana Sangha. Please write on the check what the dana is for. We hope that you'll be generous to our wonderful teachers. (For more about dana, here is an essay from the Cloud Mountain Retreat Center site: Dana The Practice of Generosity.)
Interviews: Eric Kolvig, our resident teacher, offers 20 minute interviews between 4 and 6 pm on the nights he is here to give a Thursday evening talk. To sign up for an interview with Eric, call Alexcia Trujillo at 265-6206 or speak with her at a sangha meeting.
Laura Wright visits our sangha monthly and offers interviews before her dharma talks. Please contact Laura to schedule an interview: lauralwrightnm.com. Also, Laura is offering an Independent Sutta Study Course. If you are interested please contact her.
Dinner: If you'd like to socialize with other sangha people before the meetings, please come for dinner at 5:00. We gather at restaurants not too far from the Wat. See Thursday Night Dinners for details.
History: For a list of Thursday night happenings in the past, since April 1999, see Thursday Night Meetings Previous Activities.
