Research and development activity in Intelligent Manufacturing focuses on several application domains as well as collaborates in the general research activities of the Special Interest Group in Manufacturing, SIGMAN, of the American Association of Artificial Intelligence, AAAI. George Luger is on the planning committee for the biannual conferences of SIGMAN, as well as the proceedings editor for the first two conferences (1996, 1998). These proceedings are published by and available through AAAI Press. This conference is sponsored by NSF, ARPA, DOE, NIST, AAAI, and others. Leslie Interrante of Sandia National Laboratories is the Chair of these meetings.
Applications of the Intelligent Manufacturing technology at UNM include the development of Intelligent Control processes for monitoring and diagnosis of complex domains, including particle beam accelerators and hot and cold rolling mills. A second application, the FASTCAST project, is an expert visualization system for the design of moulds, gates, runners, and insulators for casting. This project is supported by Sandia National Laboratories and a consortium of metal casting companies.
