Workers in scientific visualization seek to use the power of modern graphics workstations to discover the information in large data sets such as generated by simulations and various new imaging technologies.

The close proximity of the national laboratories to the University of New Mexico makes New Mexico a unique place to pursue research and teaching in computer graphics and scientific visualization.

The availability of unique supercomputing facilities at the Albuquerque High Performance Computer Center, Sandia National Laboratories and the Los Alamos National Laboratory have led to a number of cooperative efforts in visualization, massively parallel rendering, virtual reality, and application areas such as robotics.
