2nd Workshop on Algorithm Engineering and Experiments
ALENEX 00
January 7-8, 2000, San Francisco
The 2nd Workshop on Algorithm Engineering and Experiments (ALENEX 00),
was held in San Francisco on January 7-8, 2000, with 60 participants from
North and South America, Europe, and Asia.
The workshop was held in the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway in San Francisco,
the same hotel in which SODA 00 took place in the following 3 days.
The aim of the annual ALENEX workshops is to provide a forum for the
presentation of original research in the implementation and experimental
evaluation of algorithms and data structures.
The program committee received 35 submissions, of which 15 were accepted
and will be presented at the workshop.
The scientific program included an invited talk, a tutorial,
contributed research papers, a panel discussion, software demos, and
ample time for debate of topics in this rapidly evolving research area.
Papers presented original research
in all aspects of algorithm engineering and experimentation including:
- Implementation, experimental testing, and fine-tuning of discrete algorithms.
- Development of software repositories and platforms which allow
use of, and experimentation with, efficient discrete algorithms.
- Methodological issues including standards in the context of
empirical research on algorithms and data structures.
- Methodological issues regarding the process of converting user
requirements into efficient algorithmic solutions and implementations.
A special issue of the
ACM Journal of Experimental Algorithmics
will be devoted to selected papers from this workshop.
