Chess

I learned to play many years ago from a babysitter. I hadn't played in quite a while when, early in '93, I started hanging out in Washington Square Park, in New York City. The level of skill and lunacy there is unmatched in my experience. Its a lot of fun to see the pot peddlers sit down for a game in between rounds of harrassing passersby.

These days I belong to the Coronado Chess Club, which meets Wednesdays at 7:00 in the evening at the Frontier Restaurant (Central and Stanford). Usually two 30 minute games (action chess) are organized. Some people just come for Blitz.

On Saturday afternoons I play Blitz at Silvertones, formerly E.J.'s, at the corner of Yale and Silver. Sometimes we set up a ladder, other times not. The food and coffee are good too. Next door to Silvertones is Sandia Budokan, where I practice karate.

Here's a starting point to internet resources on chess.

More recently Chinese Chess (not to be confused with Chinese Checkers) is taking up some of my time. It is similar enough to International Chess that some tactical ideas can be brought over intact, but more than different enough to be a refreshing change. To learn more, click here.
