Karate
The dojo I practice at is
Sandia Budokan. The variety of karate practiced there is Nippon Koryu
Karate-Do, which means Japanese Old-style Karate Way. It is less
sport oriented, more self-defense oriented, than some other forms of karate.
There is also a page for
Shotokan
Karate
which is a related form started by Gichin Funakoshi, known as the founder of modern Karate.
For me the rewards of studying the art are primarily psychological
(though I have to admit it is a good workout). After practicing I
feel much calmer.
The dojo also teaches Aikijutsu (related to Aikido) and Ken-Jutsu (Japanese Sword fighting). It is located right next to Silvertones (at the corner of Yale
and Silver, here in Albuquerque) where I play
chess on Saturday afternoons.
