architectures, such as the iPSC/860, do not let the network interface
access memory directly. Instead, the network interface consists
of a send and a receive FIFO. A program has to read and write the
FIFO for each word transferred. Access to the FIFO registers has
to be controlled to prevent applications from reading data that
is intended for another process.
