The Red Fort: Lahore Gate
Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal emperor and builder of the Taj Mahal in Agra, moved his court to Delhi in 1638. Taking nine years to build and covering 125 acres, the Red Fort, besides its defensive function, served as the administrative center of the empire. Its name comes from the red sandstone used in the construction of its walls, gates, and minor buildings. The Lahore Gate is the main entryway. In Mughal times the alley leading from the gate to the central part of the complex was a bazaar — today it is lined with shops selling souvenirs to tourists.
