The Tree Nymph
Mentioned in every guidebook, the tree-nymph-with-mango-tree, or Salabhanjika, is surely the most photographed of the sculptures on the gateways of the Great Stupa. Having no connection with the Buddha’s life or the Jataka tales of his previous existences, and not even providing structural support, despite its look and location, the sculptor was free to indulge his creative impulses.
