Conferences

I was the Proceedings Chair for the Twentieth International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML-2003) held in Washington D.C., August 21-24, 2003.

I was also a co-chair of a workshop held in conjunction with ICML-2003 on "Machine Learning Technologies for Autonomous Space Applications". The workshop was excellent, and we all learned a lot about the various open problems, practical issues, and directions for future work. A summary of the day should be available online soon.

I was co-chair of the 2005 Workshop on Data Mining Methods For Anomaly Detection, held in conjunction with KDD-2005.

I helped Kiri Wagstaff organize the 2006 AAAI/SIGART Doctoral Consortium.

I am chair of the 2006 KDD Cup data mining competition.

I am a faculty advisor for the NSF-sponsored "Research Experiences for Undergraduates" (REU) project on Embedded Machine Learning Systems.

National Youth Science Campus, NYSC Alumni Association

NYSC Logo I work with the National Youth Science Camp. This is an annual science camp held in the mountains of West Virginia, near the National Radio Astronomy Observatory site at Green Bank, West Virginia. The camp is an amazing, four-week experience for top-flight high school graduating seniors from all over the US and from a few foreign countries. I attended the camp myself as a delegate in 1990, and now I'm proud to have been able to return to lecture there in 2003 and 2005. I'm also a member of the NYSC Alumni Association and am currently serving as their Secretary.

Undergrad Stuff

I am the faculty advisor for the UNM Student ACM Chapter.

I organize and oversee the UNM CS Undergraduate Tutoring Program. If you're struggling with a CS class, I encourage you to go talk to the tutors. They're all good people and they're very smart. But, most importantly, they've all been where you are now and can give great advice on how to navigate the CS maze. If you have questions or concerns about the program, please contact me.
