Bhutanese Girl at the Paro Tsechu
The last day of the Paro Tsechu was the most crowded. I managed to get a seat in the stone-seat grandstand next to a Bhutanese family. It eventually became so crowded there was no hope of moving and I stayed in the grandstand all day. This is the seven-year-old daughter.

Bhutan has compulsory, universal and free public education, though delivery in the more rural areas is spotty due to lack of teachers and funds. The language of instruction is English. They begin learning English in the first grade, so the older children speak it well, and many are reasonably fluent. This seven-year-old still had only a few words and phrases, but we hit it off anyway.
