Giant Beetle
We found this giant beetle in our mess tent in the morning. The beetle is sitting on Ian Wade's arm, which lets you know how big it really was. (Ian was the KE Adventure Travel tour leader.)

More serious than giant beetles were leeches. And though they are essentially harmless, I decided I'd rather not get bitten by one -- with a little luck, vigilance and long pants I managed not to get bitten; some of the other trek members were not so fortunate. (You don't actually feel it when a leech attaches itself to you, but you discover it later when your find blood on your shirt or socks or wherever.)

As we gained elevation, all the subtropical plant and animal life disappeared, and we weren't bothered by leeches for most of the trip.
