You may not realize it, but machine learning techniques are popping up all around you. Since the 1970's, spacecraft, satellites, and aircraft have used Kalman filters to determine where they are. Tivo, Amazon, and Netflix all use "recommender systems" that employ more-or-less sophisticated forms of ML to help figure out what you want. Google uses ML clustering techniques to rank web pages and divide them into related topic groups. In this talk, I'll give a brief overview of some machine learning background and applications, and then I'll turn it over to some of my current students to discuss their research. They'll each spend short segments describing their work in analysis of neuroimaging data, kernel computations, and bioinformatics.
