Dongarra elected into the National Academy of Sciences
June 28, 2023
Jack Dongarra, who received a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from UNM in 1980 and worked closely with faculty in the Department of Computer Science, has been elected into the National Academy of Sciences.
Dongarra is an emeritus distinguished professor at the University of Tennessee and works at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Last fall, UNM honored Dongarra, who was the recipient of the 2021 The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) A.M. Turing Award.
Dongarra’s research was foundational to the field of computer science at UNM and in particular, high-performance computing. His advisor, Cleve Moler (who was the author of the first version of MATLAB), helped create the UNM Department of Computer Science in the late 1970s.
