Abstract Madlibs

Jorge Cham's latest PhD Comic sounds like so many abstracts I've read, and probably like many that I've written!

Why do you have that book about Renaissance Magic on your wishlist?

You mean "The Devil's Doctor: Paracelsus and the World of Renaissance Magic and Science" by Philip Ball? It looks like an interesting window into the history of science, describing a time when alchemy stood in for, but was making progress toward, chemistry, and witchdoctory stood in for medicine.

It does look eerily familiar, though I actively try to avoid putting a citation in an abstract (because it annoys me), unless there is no way around it.

Hopefully Jorge won't scoop me on the obituary Madlibs I plan to write one of these days.
