Getting Started
Getting a CS account
To access the CS department workstations and servers, you will need a CS account. This is separate from your UNM NetID username and password.
Your CS account will give you access to a new email address (your_CS_username@cs.unm.edu) and a private storage space that will be accessible to you from all CS workstations.
To sign up for a CS account, send an email to cssupport@cs.unm.edu with all the following information:
- A photo of your UNM ID card, or a photo of your government-issued ID if you don’t have a UNM ID; the ID should show your picture and full name
- Your UNM ID number
- Your preferred username (lowercase alphanumeric only)
- The CS class number you will be using this account with (e.g. CS 152)
- Your status (pre-CS, undergraduate CS, graduate CS, faculty, staff, or guest (non-CS major))
After getting your account, you can use it to access computers in the CS student lab or in the CS classroom in Centennial B146.
Student Lab Resources
The CS student computer lab is in Farris Hall, on the second floor, in room 2065. To physically enter the lab, students need to first register their UNM ID card in person at the front desk in the CS Department Office, Farris Hall, Suite 2200 (2nd floor). You can also access the CS lab workstations remotely via Secure Shell (ssh) if that is more convenient.Computers
There are three groups of CS lab computers, all running Ubuntu Linux 22:
- moons.cs.unm.edu
- trucks.cs.unm.edu
- toons.cs.unm.edu
You can access these remotely with Secure Shell (ssh). A command-line version of ssh is included with the Linux, macOS, and Windows (10 and later) operating systems. Your laptop or personal computer very likely already has this tool installed. You can also use other SSH clients such as PuTTY (Windows only) if you prefer.
To access a CS computer from your personal laptop or computer, open Terminal (macOS or Linux) or PowerShell (or Command Prompt) (WIndows), and type in a command like the following, entering your password when prompted:
ssh your_cs_username@trucks.cs.unm.edu
Printers
In the student lab, you can print from any workstation to either the black & white laser printer (fe2065) or the color laser printer (fe2065c). If the printer is out of paper, send an email to cssupport@cs.unm.edu to request a restock.
The CS department also operates a large format poster printer for CS-related activities. If you need to create a poster for a CS class, presentation, or conference, save it as a PDF file (48 inches by 36 inches recommended paper size), and email it to cssupport@cs.unm.edu.
WiFi
If you are on campus, you can access the CS workstations and servers if your laptop is connected via the Lobo-WiFi wireless network.
Note: the Lobo-Guest network will not work for CS access since ssh connections are not permitted.
Source Code
You can use Subversion remotely to store your source code, if you have configured it. However check with your instructor first to see if they recommend using a git repository instead.
You can access your CS email with any browser via the CS webmail service at https://roundcube.cs.unm.edu .
For other ways to access your CS email, see the email setup page for more details on how to set up your email to be checked and sent securely from your personal phone, tablet, or computer.
