Assistant Professor

The Department of Computer Science in the School of Engineering at The University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position. We welcome candidates in all areas of computing, particularly those with expertise in quantum computing, theory and algorithms, or cybersecurity.

UNM CS has 21 tenured and tenure-track faculty, including nine NSF CAREER Award recipients and one PECASE recipient. Two CAREER awards and the PECASE were received in the last three years. Our faculty lead three new School of Engineering centers: the National Security Engineering Center, the Center for Robotic Intelligent Systems with Trustworthy Autonomy, and the Center for Molecular Engineering and Computation; additionally, the newly appointed director of the Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC) is from CS. We maintain strong ties with several local institutions, including Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories, the Quantum New Mexico Institute, the Santa Fe Institute, and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

UNM offers a welcoming academic community where faculty can build rewarding careers. Its dual-career hiring policies support the recruitment and retention of faculty and their partners. UNM is a Research 1: Very High Research Spending and Doctorate Production Institution and a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution. Located in Albuquerque between the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande, UNM offers easy access to hiking, cycling, climbing, and skiing, as well as a lively arts and music scene and New Mexico’s rich cultural traditions. New Mexico invests significantly in education and families: it is the first state to offer both tuition-free college for eligible residents at public colleges and universities, including UNM, and universal, no-cost child care with no income limits.

Applicants must have completed a doctorate in Computer Science or a closely related area by their employment start date. Preferred qualifications include demonstrated potential to establish a nationally visible research program; commitment to undergraduate and graduate education; expertise in quantum computing, theory and algorithms, or cybersecurity; and a demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university’s mission to serve local and global communities.

Each application must include:

  • Cover letter summarizing the applicant’s experience and future plans (2 pages)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Research statement (3 pages)
  • Teaching statement (2 pages)
  • Full contact information for at least three professional references

For best consideration, complete applications must be received by December 5, 2026. The position will remain open until filled.

Applications must be submitted through UNMJobs (Req# 38093).
